Shaylee Hanson, a senior at Lapeer West, was presented with the prestigious President’s Volunteer Service Award last month, recognizing her for making a difference through volunteer service.
The honor was bestowed upon Shaylee for having successfully completed 100 hours of community service as an outgrowth of her participation in the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership seminar.
Shaylee received an award certificate from the Corporation for National & Community Service and a letter from President Barack Obama thanking her for service to the nation.
I, too, want to recognize Shaylee for her tremendous service. She is an excellent example of the Lapeer spirit and a tremendous asset to our school community. I’m certain that she will build on her volunteer experience and continue to lend a helping to anyone who needs it.
Great job Shaylee!

Great job Shaylee! I am so proud of you. You are a fantastic young lady with a kind heart!
As a board member at the Family Literacy Center I am very aware of all Shaylee has done for us. She is an example for all people, young and old, how to give back. Congratulations.
Thank you everyone.
